Vols to play Bowling Green in 2015

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Bowling Green is replacing UAB as Tennessee's season-opening opponent in 2015.

Tennessee announced Tuesday that it had reached an agreement to play Bowling Green on Sept. 5 at LP Field in Nashville.

The Volunteers had been planning to play UAB at the same date and location. UAB announced last week that it was shutting down its football program, forcing Tennessee to find a new opponent.

Bowling Green originally had been scheduled to play South Carolina State on Sept. 3. Bowling Green athletic department spokesman Scott Swegan said that game was canceled when South Carolina State backed out of its contract.

Under terms of the contract, Tennessee will pay Bowling Green $1.2 million for agreeing to play the game. This will mark the first meeting between the programs.
