Mountain West Championship Capsule

Fresno State (6-6, 5-3 Mountain West) at No. 22 Boise State (10-2, 7-1, No. 22 CFP), 10 p.m. ET (CBS).

Line: Boise State by 20.

Series Record: Boise State leads 12-5.

WHAT'S AT STAKE

Boise State can assure its spot in one of the major bowls with a victory over the Bulldogs -- likely a trip to the Fiesta Bowl. After finishing the regular season with three straight wins to get to 6-6, Fresno State is bowl eligible and seeking a third straight Mountain West title. Doing so will mean winning in Boise for the first time since 1984. Of 496 FBS teams since 1980 to start the season 0-3, Fresno State is just the 21st to become bowl eligible.

KEY MATCHUP

Fresno State vs. History. Kind of a strange matchup. At one time, Fresno State was known for pulling the occasional headline-grabbing upset. But the last time the Bulldogs knocked off a ranked opponent was the 2004 MPC Computers Bowl and an overtime win over Virginia. Fresno State has lost 18 straight to ranked foes since. A win that spoils the Broncos playing in another major bowl game would be a boost for Fresno State heading into a bowl game and into next season with 14 potential starters returning for the Bulldogs.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Fresno State: RB Marteze Waller. When the Bulldogs and Broncos met earlier this season, Waller was nearly unstoppable. Waller rushed 18 times for a career-high 164 yards and two touchdowns, including a 76-yard TD run. It was the most yards allowed by Boise State since Michigan State's Le'Veon Bell had 210 yards rushing in 2012. Fresno State will need another big game from Waller.

Boise State: RB Jay Ajayi. Not that he needed more motivation, but after running for 1,619 yards and 24 touchdowns in the regular season, Ajayi was passed over for Mountain West offensive player of the year with the award going to Colorado State QB Garrett Grayson. Last week, Ajayi rushed for 229 yards and five touchdowns in the Broncos' rout of Utah State to win the Mountain Division. Ajayi rushed for 158 yards and two scores against Fresno State in October.
