Vanderbilt releases 3 assistants

Former UCLA coach Karl Dorrell is one of three Vanderbilt assistants who will not be retained, Commodores coach Derek Mason announced Wednesday.

Dorrell served as Vanderbilt's offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. Receivers coach Marc Lubick and strength and conditioning coach Bill Hughan also will not return next season.

Dorrell led UCLA from 2003 to 2007 and was named the 2005 Pac-10 Conference co-Coach of the Year with a 10-2 record. During his five years at UCLA, Dorrell compiled a 35-27 record and led the Bruins to five bowl games.

"I have great respect for Karl, Marc and Bill and appreciate their contributions to our program," Mason said in a statement. "They are men of character and excellent coaches. I wish each of them nothing but success in the future."

The Commodores went 3-9 and 0-8 in SEC play during Mason's first season as coach. It was the first losing season for Vandy since former coach James Franklin came aboard in 2011.

Vanderbilt finished the regular season ranked near the bottom of the SEC in all of the major offensive and defensive categories.

Under Franklin, Vanderbilt went to a school-record three straight bowl games (winning two) and had back-to-back nine-win seasons for the first time in school history.
