Walt Hameline stepping down

College Football

NEW YORK -- Longtime Wagner coach Walt Hameline is stepping down after 34 years and a school-record 223 victories.

Hamelin, 63, will remain at the school as athletic director, a position he has held since 1982. Associate head coach and offensive coordinator Jason Houghtaling, 33, will be promoted to replace Hameline.

Wagner finished this season 7-4, 5-1 in the Northeast Conference to earn a share of the league championship with Sacred Heart. The Seahawks finished the season with a 23-20 win at Bryant on Saturday and did not make the FCS playoffs. Sacred Heart received the conference's automatic bid to the playoffs.

Hameline is one of 36 NCAA coaches at any level to win 200 games at one school. He led the Seahawks to a Division III national championship in 1987.
