Five players arrested, suspended

CALIFORNIA, Pa. -- Five football players from a state university in western Pennsylvania have been arrested and suspended from the school after police say they beat and stomped a man outside an off-campus restaurant.

Thirty-year-old Lewis Campbell of West Chester is in intensive care with severe brain trauma following the beating early Thursday.

Police say the California University of Pennsylvania players attacked Campbell as he tried to stop an argument between his girlfriend and a player. They say the players beat and stomped Campbell and yelled "Football strong!" as they fled in a car.

The players are jailed on charges of aggravated assault, recklessly endangering another person, harassment and conspiracy to commit aggravated assault.

The university suspended the players and told the state athletic conference the Division II football team won't play Saturday against Gannon University.
