Knute Rockne's former house for sale

It's not the house that Rockne built, but it is Knute Rockne's former house, and it is up for sale.

The place the legendary Notre Dame coach once called home is on the market for $500,000, in the East Wayne Street historic district in South Bend, Indiana. The two-story Tudor-style house is 4,180 square feet.

It is the place Rockne and his family were living in at the time of his death in 1931. Mourners paid their respects there, standing outside and dropping off flowers to his widow. Bonnie Gwendoline Skiles lived there until her death in 1956, according to the listing, which says that the current owners, family friends, purchased the home from the estate a year later.

Only two families have lived in the house since it was commissioned by Rockne.

According to the listing, the four-bedroom home has three bathrooms and is situated on a double lot that includes a tennis court, a detached two-car garage, gardens and a large terrace with an outdoor kitchen for entertaining.

Rockne spent his entire coaching career at Notre Dame. He was 105-12-5 in 13 seasons (1918-30), a winning percentage of .881. He is famous for the quote "Show me a gracious loser and I'll show you a failure." He died in an airplane crash in Kansas on March 31, 1931.
