Nick Perry ejected for targeting

College Football, Alabama Crimson Tide, Southern Miss Golden Eagles, Florida Gators

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- No. 3-ranked Alabama will be without starting free safety Nick Perry for the first half of next week's game against SEC rival Florida after the senior was ejected for targeting in the third quarter of Saturday's 52-12 win against Southern Miss.

Perry, who has started in all three of Alabama's games this season, made helmet-to-helmet contact with Southern Miss receiver Kyle Foster, who did not catch the intended pass. Since the ejection came in the second half, by rule he must sit out the first half of the following game.

With Perry out for the start of the Florida game, Alabama likely will turn to junior Geno Smith, who is listed as a starter at the "star" inside cornerback position in addition to being the top backup at free safety.

Jabriel Washington and Laurence "Hootie" Jones are two other options to replace Perry in the secondary.

Jarrick Williams, another of Alabama's veteran defensive backs, also is expected to miss the Florida game as he recovers from a fracture in his foot.
