Oklahoma State: Sign not OK

College Football, Florida State Seminoles, Oklahoma State Cowboys

STILLWATER, Okla. -- Oklahoma State officials say a sign held by students that referenced the Trail of Tears prior to the game against Florida State crossed the line.

Oklahoma news outlets reported that the sign, held Saturday during ESPN's "College GameDay" in downtown Fort Worth, Texas, read: "Send 'em home #Trail-of-Tears #GoPokes."

The school's official Twitter account asked for the sign to be removed. Neither FSU nor the Seminole Nation immediately responded to requests for comment.

The Trail of Tears refers to the relocation of Native Americans from the southeastern U.S. in the 19th century. The removal included members of the Cherokee, Muscogee, Seminole, Chickasaw and Choctaw nations, which are now based in Oklahoma.

Oklahoma State plays No. 1 FSU in Dallas on Saturday night.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
