How did we rank the players?

We asked 32 of ESPN's college football writers and editors to rate players on a scale of 0-10 based on their expected contributions for this upcoming season.

30 Antwan Goodley, Baylor Bears

Score: 7.78

The Bears senior secured his spot on this list with 71 receptions for 1,339 yards and 13 touchdowns, averaging 18.9 yards per reception in 2013. The speed of an elite receiver and the physical style of a running back combine to make Goodley a defensive back's nightmare.

29 Mario Edwards Jr., Florida State Seminoles

Score: 7.88

At season's end, Edwards' numbers might not be indicative of an elite player, but there might not be a more valuable player along the Seminoles' line. If Edwards is as dominant this season as he was against Auburn, he will become a household name.

28 Nick O'Leary, Florida State Seminoles

Score: 7.91

His initial claim to fame was being Jack Nicklaus' grandson, but O'Leary has carved out a career that ranks among the best in school history at the position. Healthy from a second offseason motorcycle accident, O'Leary will be Jameis Winston's red zone security blanket in 2014.

27 Sean Mannion, Oregon State Beavers

Score: 7.94

On pace to become the Pac-12's all-time leading passer, Mannion helped Brandin Cooks win the Biletnikoff last season. With Cooks gone, all eyes are on Mannion to see if he can duplicate the results without a standout receiver.

T-24 Duke Johnson, Miami Hurricanes

Score: 7.97

The most dynamic back in the ACC, Johnson has his sights set on his first 1,000-yard season after a broken ankle derailed his stellar 2013 campaign. Johnson has rushed for more than 1,800 career yards, but the most impressive number is his career yards per carry average: 6.6.

T-24 Hroniss Grasu, Oregon Ducks

Score: 7.97

The third in the trio of Ducks who returned, Grasu will be a key element to the offensive line in his final season at Oregon. The fifth-year senior has an established chemistry with quarterback Marcus Mariota and is the vocal and emotional leader for a newly beefed-up Oregon offensive line.

T-24 Mike Davis, South Carolina Gamecocks

Score: 7.97

In his first season as a starter, Davis rushed for 1,183 yards and 11 touchdowns and caught 34 passes. He runs with power and toughness but also has the kind of breakaway speed that led to a pair of 75-yard runs last season.

23 Brandon Scherff, Iowa Hawkeyes

Score: 8.03

A former high school quarterback, track star and all-state pitcher, Scherff found the right spot in college at left tackle, anchoring the Iowa offensive line. He turned down NFL riches after last season to display his otherworldly strength on the college scene for another season.

22 Nick Marshall, Auburn Tigers

Score: 8.13

Off-field troubles aside, Marshall is the top returning quarterback in the SEC. He threw for 1,976 yards, rushed for 1,068 and scored 26 total touchdowns. He knows how to run Gus Malzahn's offense, but how will he improve as a passer in 2014?

21 Ameer Abdullah, Nebraska Cornhuskers

Score: 8.19

The nation's top returning rusher and third on the career FBS chart among active players, Abdullah gets his shot at a third 1,000-yard season, a feat that's never been accomplished at Nebraska. His 1,690 yards last fall ranked as the highest total at the school since 1997.<
