How did we rank the players?

We asked 32 of ESPN's college football writers and editors to rate players on a scale of 0-10 based on their expected contributions for this upcoming season.

50 Derrick Henry, Alabama Crimson Tide

Score: 7.28

At this time a year ago, Henry had yet to receive his first carry and there were still questions as to whether he could even be a running back at the next level. He answered those questions and more with his performance in the Sugar Bowl.

T-47 Tyler Lockett, Kansas State Wildcats

Score: 7.34

Lockett jumped from an elite returner to elite receiver and returner as a junior. Just ask Oklahoma. He had six receptions for 206 yards and three touchdowns against the Sooners -- in the first half. His playmaking ability is second-to-none in the Big 12.

T-47 Reese Dismukes, Auburn Tigers

Score: 7.34

In a league chock-full of talented centers, Dismukes is at the top of the list. He has started 37 games over the past three seasons and will serve as the anchor for one of college football's best offensive lines.

T-47 Stefon Diggs, Maryland Terrapins

Score: 7.34

Diggs was on pace for a 1,500-yard campaign last season before he suffered a leg injury. If he can stay healthy, he can be as dangerous as any other receiver in the country.

46 Christian Hackenberg, Penn State Nittany Lions

Score: 7.41

Hackenberg's ceiling is nearly unlimited. He threw for 2,955 yards and 20 touchdowns as an 18-year-old. He already has the arm and poise of an NFL quarterback, but he'll be breaking Penn State records for at least two more seasons.

T-43 Ramik Wilson, Georgia Bulldogs

Score: 7.44

While Georgia's defense struggled for most of 2013, Wilson quietly collected a league-high 133 tackles (76 solo). Wilson has a chance to be a first-round NFL draft prospect with his ability to play in the middle, play behind the line of scrimmage and cover ground from sideline to sideline.

T-43 Dante Fowler Jr., Florida Gators

Score: 7.44

Fowler is one of Florida's most versatile players as a hybrid defensive end/linebacker at the "Buck" position. He can rush the quarterback, contain the run and drop back in coverage. Along with his 18.5 tackles for loss and six sacks, his tremendous speed and strength make him a lethal defender.

T-43 Michael Bennett, Ohio State Buckeyes

Score: 7.44

Bennett began his career as a defensive end and it shows, as he uses his athleticism to disrupt the line of scrimmage as a defensive tackle. He led all Big Ten interior linemen in sacks last season.

T-41 Devonte Fields, TCU Horned Frogs

Score: 7.47

When healthy and eligible, there might not be a more dominating defensive player in the Big 12. After an injury-marred 2013 season, Fields is healthy again. But after he was "separated" from TCU, his eligibility is in major jeopardy.

T-41 A.J. Johnson, Tennessee Volunteers

Score: 7.47

Raking in plenty of preseason accolades, Johnson is back for his senior year at Tennessee with 324 career tackles, including 21.5 tackles for loss. Johnson, who mans the middle of Tennessee's defense, has registered double-digit tackles 18 times in 36 career games.
