How did we rank the players?

We asked 32 of ESPN's college football writers and editors to rate players on a scale of 0-10 based on their expected contributions for this upcoming season.

T-76. QB Chuckie Keeton, Utah State Aggies
Score: 6.81
Keeton has passed for nearly 6,000 yards and run for more than 1,100 with 70 total touchdowns. He helped the Aggies nearly upset defending BCS national champion Auburn in 2011 and led them to an 11-win season in '12. Now consider he did it all in 28 games.

T-76. CB Trae Waynes, Michigan State Spartans
Score: 6.81
Overshadowed by All-American Darqueze Dennard last season, Waynes steps into a leading role this season as Michigan State tries to maintain its "No Fly Zone" secondary. He had three interceptions and five pass breakups in his first season as a starter.

T-76. WR Jaelen Strong, Arizona State Sun Devils
Score: 6.81
As a redshirt sophomore, Strong led the Sun Devils in receiving yards and will look to do the same -- only bigger, better and more explosively -- this season. With QB Taylor Kelly back, Strong will certainly have the chance to make a few very big dents in defenses across the Pac-12.

T-76. QB Maty Mauk, Missouri Tigers
Score: 6.81
He went 3-1 as a starter last season and threw for more than 1,000 yards with 11 touchdowns to just one interception. A viral infection caused him to lose nine pounds this summer, but Mauk says he feels faster than ever.

T-76. CB Ronald Darby, Florida State Seminoles
Score: 6.81
An argument can be made Darby is the best defensive back on FSU's roster. Quarterbacks targeting Darby completed only 33 percent of their throws last season. It was the best percentage for an ACC defensive back who saw at least 25 targets.

T-72. DE Cedric Reed, Texas Longhorns
Score: 6.84
The massive, 6-foot-6 end was quietly one of the Big 12's best pass-rushers in 2013, racking up 10 sacks, 19 tackles for loss and five forced fumbles. He could be dominant in new coach Charlie Strong's defensive scheme.

T-72. QB Taylor Kelly, Arizona State Sun Devils
Score: 6.84
He worked his way from third on the depth chart to all-conference performer. Kelly is a perfect fit for Mike Norvell's system, and with talented playmakers like D.J. Foster and Strong around him, Kelly should be poised for another strong season.

T-72. QB TE/WR Devin Funchess, Michigan Wolverines
Score: 6.84
Wide receiver or tight end? Funchess' position might be forever debated, but his talent is not. The 6-foot-5 junior is a matchup nightmare for opposing defenses, averaging more than 15 yards per catch in his first two seasons.

T-72. S Su'a Cravens, USC Trojans
Score: 6.84
An honorable mention All-Pac-12 selection as a true freshman last season, Cravens immediately asserted himself as one of the most talented players in the conference. Expect more honors to roll in for Cravens, who figures to play an even more important role for new defensive coordinator Justin Wilcox.

71. QB Connor Cook, Michigan State Spartans
Score: 6.88
Cook saved his best for when it mattered most, posting his first two 300-yard games to win MVP honors in the Big Ten title game and the Rose Bowl. Never lacking for confidence, he should get even better after a season of starting experience.
