Kevin Pope gets hardship waiver

College Football, SMU Mustangs

SMU's Kevin Pope, who played on both sides of the ball last season, has been granted a medical hardship waiver by the American Athletic Conference and will return for theĀ Mustangs.

Pope, who rushed for 89 yards and had five receptions for 61 yards last season, finished spring practice as SMU's starting running back.

But he made his biggest impact as a linebacker in 2013, starting 11 games and finishing with 91 tackles.

Pope played only one game during the 2010 season and missed the entire 2011 season because of effects from a torn ACL suffered while playing running back in high school.
