Matt Wells gets contract extension

LOGAN, Utah -- Utah State football coach Matt Wells has agreed to a contract extension through the 2018 season.

Athletic director Scott Barnes said Thursday that Wells' deal could pay over $800,000 annually with incentives and includes guaranteed step increases in each year of his contract.

Wells was promoted from offensive coordinator to head coach in December 2012 after Gary Anderson left for Wisconsin. In his first season, Wells led the Aggies to a 9-5 record, capped by a victory over Northern Illinois in the Poinsettia Bowl.
