BYU mum on honor code violations

SALT LAKE CITY -- Brigham Young University athletic director Tom Holmoe says the school will no longer comment about athletes who are suspended for violating the honor code.

The Deseret News reports the decision was made after Holmoe and university officials discussed it following the suspension of Spencer Hadley from the football team last fall.

In that case, BYU officials confirmed Hadley had violated the Mormon-owned college's honor code, which prohibits using alcohol, drugs and engaging in premarital sex.

In 2011, the university also confirmed the suspension of basketball player Brandon Davies for honor code violations.

Holmoe says the university will only discuss honor code violations if the player chooses to mention it or if it involves an arrest or encounter with police.

The school will refer to them now as violations of team rules.
