NORMAN, Okla. -- Bob Stoops was asked during Big 12 media days if he still felt appreciated by the University of Oklahoma and its fans.
Apparently, he still is.
Stoops contract was extended by two years through the 2020 season, Oklahoma announced Thursday.
"We took this action to express the University's deep appreciation for Bob Stoops' work," Oklahoma president David Boren said in a statement.
Details were not released by the school, which will formally approve the extension during a September regents meeting. Stoops was due to make $4.55 million this year.
Entering his 15th season in Norman, Stoops is just nine wins away from passing Barry Switzer as the school's all-time winningest coach.
"When I took this job, I felt in my heart and knew this isn't a stepping-stone job," Stoops said during Big 12 media days, when asked if he thought he'd be at OU the rest of his coaching career. "This isn't a job you get and do well to go to another good job. And I think I've proven that through a bunch of opportunities."
