Malik Newman leaving Mississippi State

Mississippi State freshman guard Malik Newman is going to transfer from the school.

"I appreciate all of Malik's hard work, and I wish him the very best moving forward," coach Ben Howland said. "I want nothing but the best for Malik and his family."

Newman's father, Horatio Webster, told ESPN on Monday that Newman will receive his release Tuesday.

"Everyone is on board, and there's no hard feelings," Webster said.

Newman was a highly touted prep player at Callaway High in Jackson, Mississippi. He was ranked 10th in the Class of 2015 by ESPN. He chose to stay close to home and play for Howland at Mississippi State despite receiving offers from the likes of Kentucky and Kansas.

Newman averaged 11.3 points per game this past season for the Bulldogs, but a source close to the situation told ESPN that he was "unhappy with his role and how he was utilized." Newman was fourth on the team in field goal attempts last season.

Webster said that Newman does not yet have a future destination, but he told ESPN that his son will likely narrow down his list in the next week.
