Kansas to visit Kentucky in January, first trip to Rupp Arena since '05

Kansas will play at Kentucky for the first time since 2005 when two of college basketball's blue bloods headline the Big 12/SEC Challenge on Jan. 28, 2017.

This is the second year that the Challenge will be held in the middle of the conference season.

Last season, Kansas hosted Kentucky and won 90-84 in overtime.

The two schools have met multiple times in the Champions Classic on a neutral court, the last time in 2014 in Indianapolis. Kentucky won that game and has won four of the last five meetings.

Both schools are expected to be in the top 10 entering the season.

"It's a great venue with terrific players playing in it,'' Kansas coach Bill Self said. "Our guys will look forward to the Challenge.''

Kansas will once again play a top-flight schedule, opening with Indiana in the Armed Forces Classic in Honolulu on Nov. 11.

Kansas will play Duke -- likely the preseason No. 1 team -- while Kentucky will play Michigan State in the Champions Classic in New York on Nov. 15.

Texas A&M, which won a share of the regular-season SEC title with Kentucky, will play at West Virginia in the other marquee matchup between two likely top 25 teams.

The other matchups to watch will be Texas at Georgia, Florida at Oklahoma, Baylor at Ole Miss and LSU at Texas Tech. Those matchups involve teams that enter the preseason with legitimate shots to make the NCAA tournament.

The rest of the Big 12/SEC Challenge includes Iowa State at Vanderbilt, Kansas State at Tennessee, Arkansas at Oklahoma State and Auburn at TCU.

Times and networks for the Challenge will be announced at a later date.
