BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Forward Justin Moss was one of three Buffalo men's basketball players accused of stealing $650 out of a dorm room in June, some three months before the Mid-American Conference player of the year was dropped from the team.
The allegation of theft was included in a University at Buffalo Police report obtained by the Associated Press following a request under the Freedom of Information Law.
On Monday, the school announced that Moss was no longer a member of the team or enrolled in classes. The school declined to comment further by citing federal privacy laws protecting student records.
The Buffalo News first reported the theft, which occurred on June 2.
According to police, Moss and teammates Mory Diane and Raheem Johnson had access to the dorm room after being issued a master key to the apartment complex as part of a job to replace batteries in smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
The complaint was made later that evening by two members of the football team. One said he had $500 taken from his wallet, while the other said he had $150 taken from his wallet, which was on the night stand.
Police were informed that the three basketball players admitted to the theft when approached by coaches, who called a team meeting. A coach, whose name was not revealed, informed police that arrangements were made for Moss to return the money.
The report said the football players declined to press charges after their money and three condoms were returned.
All three players were suspended by the team. The matter was also turned over to the school's Judicial Affairs committee to determine whether to discipline the players.
The alleged theft occurred when the football players were at practice. Swipe card records showed that Moss entered the building and had possession of the master key during that time, police said. All three players were fired from their jobs after the complaints were made, according to police.
Moss had a breakout junior season in which he averaged 17.5 points and 9.2 rebounds, and led the Bobby Hurley-coached Bulls to their first NCAA Tournament appearance. Buffalo lost its opening game 68-62 to fifth-seeded West Virginia. The loss of Moss is the latest blow to hit the Bulls this offseason. Hurley left Buffalo to coach at Arizona State and was followed by Bulls starting guard Shannon Evans.
Diane and Johnson are still members of the team.
Athletic director Danny White and first-year coach Nate Oats are not available for comment, a school spokesman said.
