TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- Former Texas A&M point guard Avery Johnson Jr. will play for his father at Alabama.

First-year Crimson Tide coach Avery Johnson announced Monday that his son is switching Southeastern Conference schools. The younger Johnson has three years of eligibility remaining and will have to sit out next season under NCAA transfer rules.

The Alabama coach says he is "thrilled as both a coach and a father" to have the guard join the program, praising his son's character and skill set.

Johnson played in 13 games as a freshman at Texas A&M. He averaged 4.3 minutes and 1.4 points per game, including a 10-point debut in the opener against Northwestern State.

He played on an AAU team coached by Alabama assistant Scott Pospichal in Texas.
