Dai-Jon Parker dies of apparent drowning

Dai-Jon Parker, a former four-star recruit and Vanderbilt standout who transferred to the University of Indianapolis, died Thursday of an apparent drowning.

Parker, who transferred after he was dismissed by the Commodores in 2014, reportedly drowned on Thursday in an Indiana reservoir while riding an inner tube that was pulled by a pontoon boat.

The boat hit a wave, which tossed Parker and another male into the water. Indiana authorities said Parker was not wearing a life jacket.

"The entire University of Indianapolis community mourns the loss of Dai-Jon Parker, a senior student-athlete with a vibrant personality who had a great future ahead," said a statement from the school. "This is a tragic situation for everyone involved. ... Please keep Dai-Jon's family, friends and teammates in your thoughts and prayers."

The Indiana Department of Natural Resources is still investigating the incident, according to University of Indianapolis sports information director Ryan Thorpe.

Parker averaged 5.4 points and 3.1 rebounds in three seasons for Vanderbilt before transferring to Division II University of Indianapolis last season.

"We are extremely saddened with the news of Dai-Jon's death," Vanderbilt coach Kevin Stallings said in a statement. "Everyone who watched him play basketball knew what kind of athlete he was. But, to those of us who knew him and loved him, he was as good and happy of a person as you would ever meet. He always had a smile on his face and I will always remember him for that smile and the positive spirit he had."
