Devin Davis, Hanner Mosquera-Perea kicked off team

Men's College Basketball, Indiana Hoosiers

Two days after suspending Devin Davis following a citation for possession of marijuana and saying it would investigate the involvement of Hanner Mosquera-Perea, who was present during the incident, Indiana announced it has dismissed the two players from the team for "not living up to their responsibilities to the program."

University police spokesman Lt. Craig Munroe said police responded Monday to a complaint of the smell of marijuana. They determined the smell was coming from a second-floor room, went upstairs and found Davis and a second person, who was not identified because he was not cited.

Munroe said the two allowed the officers to search the apartment, and a small amount of raw marijuana was found in a backpack that belonged to Davis. The 6-foot-7 forward from Indianapolis was cited with possession of marijuana under 30 grams.

Coach Tom Crean said Mosquera-Perea, a 6-9 forward from Istmina, Colombia, was present at the time and his role was reviewed.

Both players had had problems previously.

Davis, a sophomore, missed all of last season after he was struck by a car driven by teammate Emmitt Holt. Police said Davis, who suffered a serious head injury, had been drinking that night, but he was not cited after the accident. Davis was expected to return to the team this season.

"As a team, we've lost two good players that once Devin got cleared would have given us two front-line, experienced and talented players. They have both been starters here. That's tough," Crean told ESPN on Friday. "What's much tougher than that as a program and as the head coach, we are not going to be able to continue to help them grow up, mature and strive for their potential. That's much more saddening than anything else."

Mosquera-Perea, a senior who averaged 6.5 points and 4.3 rebounds per game last season, was suspended in 2014 following his arrest for operating a vehicle while intoxicated. He was also charged with operating with a blood alcohol content of .15 or greater, but that charge was dismissed in a plea deal. He missed three games.

The dismissals come on the heels of a tumultuous 2014-15 season. Holt was cited for underage consumption for his role in the accident that injured Davis and missed four games. Yogi Ferrell and Stanford Robinson entered pretrial diversion programs after being charged with consumption of an alcoholic beverage by a minor and possession of false identification. Troy Williams and Robinson, who announced last month he was transferring out of the program, each missed four games for failing drug tests during the summer.

The off-court issues, coupled with a disappointing 17-15 record in 2013-14, put the heat squarely on Crean. The Hoosiers rallied last season to finish 20-14, losing to Wichita State in the round of 64 of the NCAA tournament.

Just last month, Ferrell announced he would return to Indiana for his senior season. His decision, coupled with a full roster of returnees, placed Indiana among the list of top Big Ten contenders.
