Kennesaw State has hired former national coach of the year Al Skinner to be its next men's basketball coach.
Skinner confirmed the news to ESPN on Sunday. He had most recently been the associate head coach at Bryant University the past two seasons.
The 62-year-old Skinner replaces Jimmy Lallathin, who was fired in March. Lallathin was the interim coach for the final 16 games of the 2013-14 season after Lewis Preston took a medical leave of absence. Kennesaw State, which is located outside Atlanta, finished 10-22 (4-10 Atlantic Sun) last season.
Skinner was the 2001 national coach of the year at Boston College. He is the winningest coach in Boston College history with 247 wins in 13 seasons. He was abruptly fired in 2010 after leading BC to six NCAA tournaments in a seven-year period, including the 2006 Sweet 16.
He won 138 games during nine seasons as the coach at Rhode Island. Skinner counts current NBA players Jared Dudley (Bucks) and Reggie Jackson (Pistons) as former players under him at BC.
Skinner has also been a member of the NCAA Division I men's basketball ethics coalition.
A member of the UMass Hall of Fame, Skinner's No. 30 jersey hangs in the Mullins Center rafters after he scored 1,235 points during his Minuteman career from 1971 to 1974.
