Brandon Sampson commits to LSU

Men's College Basketball, LSU Tigers, St. John's Red Storm

Former St. John's commit Brandon Sampson has decided to stay home and commit to LSU.

Sampson, a 6-foot-4 shooting guard from Madison Prep (Baton Rouge, La.), is ranked No. 39 in the ESPN 100 for the 2015 class. He chose the Tigers over Oklahoma State and St. John's.

He originally pledged to St. John's in January but reconsidered his decision after Steve Lavin and the Red Storm parted ways. St. John's was still among the schools in the mix, and new coach Chris Mullin flew down to Louisiana on Saturday in an attempt to get Sampson back in the fold.

Instead, Sampson joins an excellent recruiting class for LSU and Johnny Jones. The Tigers were already bringing in No. 1 overall prospect Ben Simmons and five-star scorer Antonio Blakeney. They are also welcoming Arizona transfer Craig Victor, who will be eligible after the first semester.

The loss of forwards Jordan Mickey and Jarell Martin to the NBA draft will hurt LSU up front, but the Tigers will have a loaded perimeter group that also includes returning starters Keith Hornsby (13.4 PPG), Tim Quarterman (11.5 PPG) and Josh Gray (7.1 PPG).
