New deal for Lavin being finalized

St. John's and coach Steve Lavin are finalizing an extension to keep him with the Red Storm for the foreseeable future, a source told ESPN.

Lavin has one year remaining on his current contract. The number of years on the new deal is still being discussed.

He led the Red Storm to the NCAA tournament, where they lost to San Diego State in the second round Friday.

Lavin has coached the Red Storm to two NCAA appearances and two NITs in five seasons. He missed one season while recovering from cancer.
