Rysheed Jordan apologizes

NEW YORK -- St. John's guard Rysheed Jordan has issued an apology after using a homophobic slur in a tweet earlier this week.

"I apologize for the language I used on Twitter in a conversation with my friends," Jordan said in a statement released by the school. "It was insensitive and something I regret because I did not mean to hurt anyone."

St. John's coach Steve Lavin said any discipline for Jordan's behavior will be handled internally.

"This is an example of very poor judgment by Rysheed," Lavin said in the statement. "We will address it within our basketball family and use this unfortunate instance as a vehicle to further educate and promote personal development."

Jordan's status for St. John's next game, at home against Providence on Saturday, already was in question. He sat out the entire second half of the team's loss to Creighton on Wednesday due to a strained patellar tendon in his left knee.

The Red Storm (13-7, 2-5 Big East) have lost six of their past eight games and currently reside in eighth place in the 10-team Big East. Jordan is the team's second-leading scorer, averaging 13.4 points per game.
