Conner Frankamp leaving Jayhawks

Men's College Basketball, Kansas Jayhawks

Kansas sophomore guard Conner Frankamp is transferring elsewhere.

Frankamp averaged 11 points per game last season in the NCAA tournament and was also considered one of the team's top shooters. However, he was already behind both sophomore Frank Mason and freshman Devonte Graham at the point guard spot, and he would also have had difficulty getting extended minutes at shooting guard with holdovers Wayne Selden Jr. and Brannen Greene and the addition of talented freshman Sviatoslav Mykhailiuk.

"I met with Conner and his father Wednesday to discuss his situation and opportunity this season at Kansas," Jayhawks coach Bill Self said in a statement. "On Thursday he informed me he was going to transfer at the end of this fall semester. From this point forward he is no longer part of this team and will not participate this semester so he can transfer after Christmas and have 2½ years remaining when he becomes eligible after sitting out one full academic year."

Frankamp scored a career-high 12 points in the loss to Stanford in the NCAA tourney while playing 18 minutes. He also logged 25 minutes in the first-round win over Eastern Kentucky. However, he averaged just 2.5 points in 8.3 minutes for the season.

"I've been thinking about this for a while now," Frankamp said. "I love KU and I love the Jayhawks. I feel like I've improved quite a bit since I've been here. I love my teammates but I just don't feel like it's the right fit for me. We have many good guards and so many big-time players. I want to be at a place where I could play a bigger role."
