Beavers freshman Chai Baker in ICU

Men's College Basketball, Oregon State Beavers

CORVALLIS, Ore. -- An Oregon State athletic department spokesman says a freshman member of the men's basketball team suffered "an apparent cardiac-related medical incident" and is hospitalized in critical but stable condition.

In a statement Wednesday, spokesman Shawn Schoeffler said Chai Baker suffered the cardiac event Tuesday morning as he worked out with teammates during informal preseason drills at the school's basketball center.

The spokesman said OSU certified athletic training staff provided immediate CPR and used an automated external defibrillator. Corvallis Fire Department medics arrived within several minutes of a 911 call.

They continued to care for Baker as he was taken to Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center in Corvallis.

Baker was hospitalized in an intensive care unit.

The school spokesman said Baker has relatives who live in Corvallis, as well as family members who have traveled from his home state of Florida to Corvallis.
