Briante Weber suspended for opener

VCU Rams point guard Briante Weber has been suspended for the season opener against Tennessee and an exhibition game for a violation of team rules, the school announced Friday.

The Richmond Times Dispatch reported a VCU police report and online court records indicate Weber was charged with misdemeanor petit larceny for stealing an iPhone 5 at VCU's Cary Street Gym on July 24. A hearing is set for Sept. 25.

"Briante has failed to live up to the standards we've set for our program and we are holding him accountable," head coach Shaka Smart said in a statement released by the school Friday. "Part of his discipline includes missed competition. We expect that Briante will act according to the standards of our program moving forward."

The 6-foot-2 senior guard has led the country in steal rate in all three of his seasons at VCU.
