Washington, Gonzaga renew rivalry

Men's College Basketball, Washington Huskies, Gonzaga Bulldogs

SEATTLE -- After a decade-long layoff, Washington and Gonzaga will renew their basketball series beginning with the 2016-17 season.

The schools announced the renewal of the matchup Monday. The date and location of the first game is yet to be determined, but the contract is a four-year deal with two games on the home court of each school in alternating years.

Washington coach Lorenzo Romar says the renewal of the matchup is good for the state. The schools last played in 2006 and there had been difficulties with previous attempts to renew the matchup. The schools met every season between December 1997 and December 2006 before the rivalry went on hiatus.

The schools were unable to start the contract any sooner because of non-conference commitments already made for the next two seasons.
