Iowa State men's basketball coach Fred Hoiberg had surgery Tuesday to replace his pacemaker, he said in a statement Tuesday.
"The surgery performed this morning at the Mayo Clinic to replace my pacemaker was successful," Hoiberg said. "The plan is for me to be discharged and allowed to return to Ames this afternoon. I want to thank my doctors and nurses at the Mayo Clinic, as well as everyone that has extended their well-wishes to me. Our family truly appreciates your support."
A month after finishing up his first season with the Minnesota Timberwolves, Hoiberg learned he had an aortic root aneurysm. During surgery, a rare complication required that doctors insert a pacemaker.
That pacemaker, Hoiberg said via text to ESPN.com, started to act up over the weekend.
"My pacemaker wasn't elevating my heart rate at all and felt very off," Hoiberg wrote. "Worked out with my wife this morning and my heart rate wouldn't elevate over 65."
Hoiberg, who retired immediately after the 2005 surgery and has taken special care since, immediately contacted his doctor.
