Gonzaga signs Domantas Sabonis

Gonzaga has signed Domantas Sabonis, son of former NBA big man Arvydas Sabonis.

The 6-foot-11, 230-pound Sabonis will give the Zags another much-needed front-line player to go along with the backcourt of Kevin Pangos and Gary Bell, who will both be seniors next season. Gonzaga loses Sam Dower but will have Kentucky transfer Kyle Wiltjer eligible next season after he sat out this past season. Coach Mark Few also will have 7-1 junior Przemek Karnowski, who averaged 10.4 points and 7.1 rebounds in 2013-14.

The younger Sabonis played for Unicaja of the Spanish ACB league but did not sign a pro contract. His game is unlike that of his father, a big, strong center who passed the ball exceptionally well. Domantas, according to one coach who has watched him play, is "skilled, mobile, tough and aggressive."

At 7-3, Arvydas Sabonis was a dominant player overseas to begin his career and then spent seven seasons with the Portland Trail Blazers. He averaged 12 points and 7.3 rebounds in an NBA career in which he was never quite 100 percent healthy.
