Dismissed Chane Behanan cited

Men's College Basketball, Louisville Cardinals

Chane Behanan's troubled year continues, as the former Louisville forward was cited for marijuana possession early Wednesday morning.

According to Louisville police, Behanan was cited around 1 a.m. just west of downtown, after an officer smelled marijuana coming from a car in which Behanan was a passenger. Behanan confirmed to the officer that he had a marijuana cigarette. He was not arrested for the misdemeanor charge but will have a court date this month.

When reached by text, Louisville coach Rick Pitino told ESPN.com that he was unaware of Behanan's citation. Pitino suspended the junior from Cincinnati on Oct. 17 for violation of university policy. He was reinstated to the team in early November but dismissed Dec. 30 for what Behanan later admitted was repeated drug use.

Behanan had been in Houston rehabilitating under John Lucas' Wellness and Aftercare program, which is tailored to athletes with substance abuse problems.

He enrolled at Colorado State in January and planned to finish out his eligibility there next season. It's unclear whether the citation will affect his status.

"I am aware of media reports that Chane has been issued a citation," Colorado State coach Larry Eustachy said in a statement issued by the school. "We are working to gather more information. Everyone associated with our program is held to a high standard, and that includes personal conduct on and off the court. We work tirelessly to recruit young men of high character who will work hard in the classroom, help our team win and represent CSU well. This news is very concerning."

On Tuesday, Behanan did an impromptu interview after passing by the ESPN 680 studios, located next to the Louisville campus. He wore the 2013 national championship ring he earned with the Cardinals and indicated he was in town "just to hang out for the last time."

The 6-foot-6 Behanan was instrumental during Louisville's championship run. He had 15 points and 12 rebounds against Michigan in the title game, and for the season he averaged 9.8 points and 6.5 rebounds in 39 games.

Behanan played in just 12 games with the Cardinals this season and averaged 7.6 points and 6.3 rebounds.
