Daily Word: Surprises from opening weekend

By ESPN.com | ESPN.com

Each day, some of our college hoops experts discuss the biggest issues, trends and themes in and around college basketball.

1. Which team are you most surprised is still around?

Andy Katz: UCLA. I didn't have the Bruins in the field. But I'm not shocked they beat UAB.

Jeff Goodman: NC State. I wasn't sold on Nova as a Final Four team, but I didn't think the Wolfpack would beat Jay Wright's club. Then again, you never know what you are going to get with a Mark Gottfried-coached team. In fact, you can easily make a case that NC State is the more talented club. However, I didn't see NC State beating LSU and Nova.

Dana O'Neil: The obvious answer would be UCLA, but the path opened wider for the Bruins with UAB, so I'll say NC State. The Wolfpack have been so wildly unpredictable this season, the fact that they put two games together back-to-back is stunning. NC State always had talent, but it was never a given it would put it together.

2. Which team are you most surprised is gone?

Katz: Iowa State. That still will go down as the biggest upset of the tournament.

Goodman: Iowa State. I know the Cyclones don't really defend much, but I just didn't see them losing to UAB. I figured they were a lock for the Sweet 16 with two guys who can really pass it in Monte Morris and Georges Niang -- and one of the better coaches around in Fred Hoiberg.

O'Neil: Virginia. The Cavaliers looked shaky down the stretch of the regular season, but I still thought they were fundamentally sound enough to make it to the Sweet 16. Instead, their offensive woes did them in against a Michigan State team that made it look easy.

3. What's the most intriguing matchup in the Sweet 16?

Katz: Wisconsin-North Carolina. The Badgers are having to earn every win. If the Badgers win the title, it won't be close as to which team had the toughest road.

Goodman: Wisconsin vs. North Carolina. The Badgers struggled against Oregon, and the Ducks are a one-man show by the name of Joe Young. The Tar Heels have their issues, but they have a guard who is capable of taking over in Marcus Paige -- and plenty of big men who could cause issues for Frank Kaminsky.

O'Neil: Have to go with Kentucky-West Virginia. Between the recent history of 2010 and Bob Huggins' ownership of John Calipari, this will be the featured match of the regional semifinals. The Mountaineers can ugly it up like Cincinnati but are even better defensively. If the Wildcat guards can't handle the pressure, this could be interesting.
