Daily Word: Weekend upset watch

By ESPN.com | ESPN.com

Every weekday, some of our college hoops experts discuss the biggest issues, trends and themes in and around college basketball.

1. Who do you have on upset watch this weekend?

Andy Katz: North Carolina. Pitt has played much better at home of late, knocking off Notre Dame at the Pete. The Tar Heels have been a typical road team -- winning games they should win, pulling out a few impressive wins (like at NC State) and then dropping a game (Louisville) that isn't a surprise. Pitt is trying to make a postseason push, and a win over the Tar Heels would certainly help.

C.L. Brown: Duke. The moment Syracuse announced its self-imposed postseason ban, the Blue Devils' trip to the Carrier Dome became the biggest game on their schedule. There's nothing but pride involved for the Orange, but considering it's a bona fide sellout of 35,446 tickets, I'd say their pride is substantial.

Dana O'Neil: North Carolina. Pitt remains limited, but the Panthers are playing much better, and a home game at the Pete always gives Pitt an edge. Plus, with Duke looming and the emotions this week with the passing of Dean Smith, this has the makings of a really tough game for the Tar Heels.

2. Which weekend game will be the most entertaining?

Katz: Arkansas at Ole Miss. This is a huge game for second place in the SEC. The Hogs put up more than 100 points at Auburn. Ole Miss can push the basketball, too. Don't be surprised to see this become a high-scoring affair.

Brown: Arizona at Washington State. Um, did you peep the Cougars' 108-99 win over Oregon at home? They don't play much defense in Pullman, but it's certainly entertaining to watch the ball advanced up the floor at that rate. With Arizona's Stanley Johnson and Rondae Hollis-Jefferson involved in a fast-paced game, hopefully there will be some "SportsCenter" Top 10 highlights.

O'Neil: Believe it or not, I will take NC State at Louisville. Heaven knows the Cards can be an offensive eyesore, but when they get going, they get going. Both teams rank in the top 100 in scoring, and these days, that's pretty good.

3. VCU has lost three of its last four. Can the Rams recover without Briante Weber (season-ending knee injury)?

Katz: The problem has been not having Treveon Graham, too. If Graham comes back, the Rams could reassert themselves in the A-10 with a road win at George Washington. But it's unfair to rip on the Rams when they haven't had Weber or Graham in the past two losses. VCU is still trying to figure out how to play without Weber.

Brown: My guess is they won't be able to recover, which is a shame because I thought they were rounding into form. Even once Graham is healthy, they don't have another player who can distribute the ball like Weber, and they definitely don't have another defender who can be as disruptive on the perimeter as he was. Weber has missed three full games and still leads the team in assists by 24, and he has more steals (78) than his next three teammates combined (JeQuan Lewis, 33; Melvin Johnson, 26; Doug Brooks, 17).

O'Neil: Without Weber? Maybe. Without Weber and Graham, who is nursing a high ankle sprain, no way. No doubt losing the primary Havoc maker is not easy for VCU, but a healthy Graham makes things worse for the Rams.

Games To Watch

No. 16 Baylor at No. 8 Kansas
Saturday, 1 p.m. ET, CBS

Baylor has never won at Allen Fieldhouse, but this could be among the Bears' best opportunities. In the first meeting between these teams, Baylor fell by a single point and held the Jayhawks to just 56 points. They average 72 per game.

South Carolina at No. 1 Kentucky
Saturday, 2 p.m. ET, ESPN

With a win over South Carolina, Kentucky can match its best start in program history. The Basketball Power Index gives the Wildcats a 98.8 percent chance to beat the Gamecocks and a 70.1 percent chance to end the regular season undefeated.

UConn at No. 25 SMU
Saturday, 9 p.m. ET, ESPN

SMU has lost just twice since Nov. 25, to Cincinnati each time. The Mustangs' game is balanced as they own the American's most efficient offense and third-most efficient defense, according to Ken Pomeroy. UConn, meanwhile, ranks fourth in both categories.
