CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- Tommy McCarthy scored 12 points with three assists as Harvard beat MIT 59-39 in a season opener Friday night.

Agunwa Okolie added 10 points for the Crimson. Corey Johnson had 9 points and Evan Cummins led with 10 rebounds. The team hit 38.5 percent from the field overall, 33.3 percent from 3-point range and 66.7 percent from the line.

Johnson sank a 3-pointer midway through the first half to give Harvard a 20-15 lead and the Crimson led 25-19 at the break.

A McCarthy 3 early in the second half sparked an 8-2 run to extend Harvard's lead to 34-26 and an 11-2 run sealed with a dunk by Chris Egi had the Crimson out front 50-28 with 11:29 to play and they cruised to the win.

Jomard Bradley led the Engineers with 10 points and four rebounds.
