RICHMOND, Va. -- Shakir Brown scored 20 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to help lead James Madison to an 87-75 win over Richmond in the season opener for both teams Friday night.
Ron Curry added 19 points and Tom Vodanovich had 15, including the go-ahead 3-pointer that ignited a 12-2 run to make it 80-70 with 1:10 left to play. Jackson Kent had 11 points for JMU, which shot 50.8 percent from the floor and held a 40-23 rebounding advantage.
Brown, who was 6 of 12 from the floor, hit all 4 of 6 3-point attempts and was 4 of 4 from the free throw line.
Richmond led by a point at the half, 36-35, and held JMU at bay until the final six minutes.
Terry Allen led the Spiders with 27 points and seven rebounds. ShawnDre' Jones had 14 points and T.J. Cline had 13.
