EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. -- Jalen Henry had 18 points and nine rebounds, and SIU-Edwardsville scored 30 points from the free-throw line en route to a 79-70 win over Arkansas State in the season opener for both teams Friday night.

Devin Carter's jumper and 3-pointer on consecutive possessions pulled the Red Wolves within 4 with 2:33 left, but Arkansas State couldn't force a stop without sending the Cougars to the charity stripe. Eleven of Henry's 18 points came via the free throw, and the team shot 40 free throws on the night, marking the first time since 2004 that the team has attempted at least 40 free throws.

Carter came off the bench to lead Arkansas State with 22 points. He made four 3-pointers and added five rebounds and three assists. Donte Thomas had 17 points and eight rebounds, and Anthony Livingston added 14 points and nine rebounds.
