NORFOLK, Va. -- Trey Freeman scored 20 points, Aaron Bacote had 18, and Old Dominion used a 14-0 run in the first half to power its 67-50 win over Niagara in the season opener for both teams on Friday.

Freeman, the Conference USA Newcomer of the Year and a first team all-league selection last season, added four rebounds and finished 7 of 19 from the floor. Denzell Taylor had nine rebounds.

Old Dominion maintained control in the second half, never letting the Purple Eagles within 5 points in the final 20 minutes. The Monarchs' win was its 25th straight at home, the seventh longest streak in Division I.

Matt Scott had team highs of 19 points and eight rebounds for Niagara, which was held to 32.7 percent shooting and committed 16 turnovers. Justin Satchell had 12 points and seven boards.
