STONY BROOK, N.Y. -- Rayshaun McGrew's layup with seven seconds left lifted Stony Brook to a 57-56 win over Columbia on Friday night in the season opener for both schools.
The lead was the Seawolves first since McGrew drilled a 3-pointer a minute into the game.
Columbia took a seven-point lead with under eight minutes to play on a jumper by Maodo Lo, but Carson Puriefoy hit back-to-back jumpers to cut the lead to three, 51-48, with 5:22 left.
Jeff Coby hit the first of two free throws and added a layup seconds later to push the Columbia lead to six at 54-48.
Lo's layup with 1:27 left made it 56-51 but Bryan Sekunda drilled a 3-pointer to pull Stony Brook within two, 56-54. McGrew cut it to one with a free throw with :13 left.
McGrew and Puriefoy each finished with 14 points for Stony Brook.
Lo led Columbia with 19 points.
