WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Purdue shot 66.7 percent from the field during the first 20 minutes Friday night and coasted to a 80-40 season-opening victory against Samford.

The Boilermakers made 16 of 24 field goals attempts, including 7 of 13 from 3-point range, en route to a 43-16 halftime advantage.

Purdue, coming off a frustrating 15-17 season, led 16-11 when it began what proved to be a game-winning 19-0 run, which began with a 3-pointer by Vince Edwards and capped by a driving layup by Bryson Scott.

Edwards and Rapheal Davis each scored 13 to lead Purdue Isaac Haas added 11 and Kendall Stephens scored 10.

The Boilermakers began the second half on a 10-0 run, taking a 53-16 lead on Jon Octeus' layup with 17:38 remaining.

Purdue's big first half included three 3-pointers from Stephens, whose father was the starting point guard for the Boilermakers' 1987 and 1988 Big Ten Conference championship teams.

In all, nine Boilermakers scored in the first half. Purdue's starters were a collective 11 of 15 from the field before halftime.

Samford was only 6 of 30 (20 percent) in the first half and was out-rebounded, 22-12.

Purdue continued to mix and match lineups in the second half of this blowout, increasing its lead to 74-33 on a pair of Davis free throws with 5:24 remaining.

TIP-INS

Purdue: Edwards became only the 16th Boilermaker freshman to earn a start in his first college games. Eleven of those freshman starters have been during coach Matt Painter's 10 seasons at his alma mater ... Purdue improved to 31-1 in November home games during the Painter era, losing only to Bucknell on Nov. 9, 2012 ... Painter improved to 9-1 in season openers at Purdue.

Samford: The Birmingham, Ala., based Bulldogs were playing their first regular-season game for coach Scott Padgett, who was a standout player at Kentucky -- winning a national championship -- before playing in the NBA ... Samford now is 0-2 against Purdue, also dropping a 66-50 decision during the 2002-2003 season ... In the Southern Conference preseason poll, the Bulldogs were picked 10th in the 10-team league.
