Seeing how Carmelo Anthony and Jeremy Lin work together will have to wait.
The New York Knicks said Anthony won't play in Friday's game against the New Orleans Hornets because of the groin injury that has sidelined him for five games.
Coach Mike D'Antoni said Anthony remains day to day.
"We'll see how he feels tomorrow morning," D'Antoni said.
When Anthony was injured Feb. 6 against Utah, the Knicks said he could miss one to two weeks. They have won seven straight behind Lin, who has taken the NBA by storm. After Friday's game at the Garden, the Knicks host the defending champion Dallas Mavericks Sunday.
D'Antoni called Anthony "questionable" for the Mavs game.
"He can play 3-on-3, but if he feels good -- but, again, we're just going to wait until there's no pain whatsoever," he said.
Some have questioned whether Lin and Anthony can coexist, because Anthony is used to having the ball in his hands quite a lot.
Lin said Thursday that it was actually Anthony who recommended to D'Antoni that the young point guard -- who was cut by two other NBA teams and spent time in the D-League this season -- get a chance.
"That's why I think it's funny right now," Lin said on ESPN New York 1050's "The Michael Kay Show." "Some people are talking about, 'Oh, can Melo adjust into the system?' I mean, Melo wants to adjust to the system, and he doesn't want to shoot 30 shots a game. The fact that he vouched for me shows a lot about him."
On the radio show, Lin raved about Anthony's scoring and playmaking, and said he'll benefit from the Knicks' upgraded pick-and-roll play. Lin said Anthony can either come off the pick-and-roll or take advantage of screen-and-dish opportunities.
"You can pretty much give him the ball in any situation, in any circumstance, and he'll make something good happen," Lin said. "I think that's the beauty of having him on the team. ... He's going to add a different dimension. There will be times where we'll have to figure it out and adjust, but we're definitely going to do that and we're going to make the most of it and become an even better offensive team."
D'Antoni said both Lin and Anthony will run the pick-and-roll at times, and that he has no doubt Anthony eventually will fit in.
"The shots will work it out. We don't worry about that," D'Antoni said. "... There might be some adjustments on both parts but I don't see it as a problem. I see it only as a good thing."
Lin soon will have another scorer to pass to as well. Former Nuggets shooting guard J.R. Smith tweeted Friday that he has chosen to join the Knicks after a stint in China.
The New York Post reported that Smith will be with the team Friday night at the Garden but will make his debut Sunday against the Mavericks.
