Sources: Ginobili discusses 1-year deal with Spurs worth nearly $10M

NBA, San Antonio Spurs

Manu Ginobili and the San Antonio Spurs are discussing a one-year deal in the $10 million range, according to league sources.

Sources told ESPN that the Spurs are preparing to take advantage of their ability to go well over the cap to reward Ginobili for his longstanding loyalty to San Antonio. The Argentinean swingman sacrificed millions in multiple contract negotiations to help the Spurs maintain financial flexibility.

‎Ginobili, who turns 39 later this month, announced last week via Twitter that he'll "be coming back to the Spurs for another season."

The Spurs have full Bird rights on Ginobili and can exceed the salary cap to re-sign him, but they must first use all of their cap space, which is expected to be consumed by this week's signings of Pau Gasol and Latvian import Davis Bertans.

The Spurs, as ESPN first reported, were also f‎orced to waive Tim Duncan, the face of the franchise, on Monday in the wake of Duncan's retirement. San Antonio made the move to stretch the $5.6 million owed to Duncan next season over the course of the next three years and help fill out their first Duncan-less roster since the 1996-97 season.
