Warriors lauded at Sports Business Awards

OAKLAND, Calif. -- The defending NBA champion Golden State Warriors added a couple of honors Wednesday night at the ninth annual Sports Business Awards.

The Warriors were named the Sports Team of the Year at the event, which was held at the Marriott Marquis in New York's Times Square. Joe Lacob, Golden State's co-executive chairman and CEO, was named the Sports Executive of the Year.

"Being named Sports Team of the Year and Sports Executive of the Year is a true testament to our Strength in Numbers and the incredible group of people we have in our organization," Lacob said in a statement. "We are committed to being one of the top franchises in professional sports, and it's a true honor to be recognized for our efforts by the Sports Business Journal."

The Sports Business Awards consist of 17 categories with 87 nominees. A panel of sports business executives served as category judges.

The other finalists for Sports Team of the Year were the Carolina Panthers, Kansas City Royals, Portland Timbers and Tampa Bay Lightning. The other nominees for Sports Executive of the Year were Brian France from NASCAR, Stan Kroenke from Kroenke Sports and Entertainment, Rob Manfred from Major League Baseball and Mark Parker from Nike.

The Warriors, who set an NBA record with 73 wins this regular season, have a 183-game sellout streak at Oracle Arena and a 28,000-member wait list for season tickets.
