Former NBA sixth man award winner Ben Gordon is finalizing a contract to join the Golden State Warriors for training camp, according to league sources.
Sources told ESPN.com that Gordon, who has been trying out for the Warriors at their practice facility in Oakland over the past few days, is likely to have a deal with the NBA's reigning champions by week's end that will give him an opportunity to try to snag a spot on Golden State's final 15-man roster.
The Warriors are on the hunt for some extra shooting and want to give Gordon a shot at winning the job. Chris Babb, Ian Clark and Jarell Eddie have also recently received camp invites from Golden State to compete for a berth in the champs' perimeter rotation.
Gordon signed a two-year, $9 million contract with the Orlando Magic last summer but became a free agent in late June after Orlando declined to pick up his Year 2 option. The Magic made the move in the name of creating more salary-cap flexibility in free agency, but Gordon was solid for the Magic, shooting 43.7 percent from the field and 36.1 percent from the 3-point line in 14.1 minutes per game.
Gordon, drafted No. 3 overall by Chicago in 2004, won NBA Sixth Man of the Year honors after his rookie season with the Bulls in 2004-05. He has averaged 14.9 points and has shot 40.1 percent from 3-point range over his 11-season career, which also includes stops in Detroit and Charlotte.
