Thunder at a crossroads, and who's next

NBA, Oklahoma City Thunder

In the latest installment of the NBA Front Office series, Tom Penn (playing the role of general manager), David Thorpe (senior consultant), Chad Ford (assistant GM), Amin Elhassan (scouting director) and Kevin Pelton (analytics director) discuss the state of the Oklahoma City Thunder following the firing of Scott Brooks. Was the move justified? Who's next for the Thunder?

Question 1: Should Scott Brooks have been fired?

Tom Penn: As you lose important games, it's so easy to blame everything on the coach and microanalyze each loss, to do an autopsy on each one and pick apart the coach. It's human nature. Over time you have all these opportunities to criticize and nitpick, and with that as a backdrop, you -- or in this case the Oklahoma City Thunder -- have to make a decision. Scott Brooks' overall body of work, in my opinion, was outstanding. He had an awesome run there, he taught those guys how to play together, how to win together, created a culture, maintained a culture. He endured tons of changes through the years, never complained. Just a dutiful soldier. I mean, they won, a lot. And they were legit. They just didn't win a title. My guess is it was really hard to let him go, because it's unfair based on the body of work.
