Tony Allen suspended one game

MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Grizzlies guard Tony Allen was suspended for Tuesday night's loss to the Utah Jazz for violating team policy.

Grizzlies coach Dave Joerger announced the one-game suspension in his media availability before the game. Joerger did not elaborate on the policy Allen violated. He said it was an isolated incident, and that he expects Allen and the team will move forward after the suspension.

The Memphis Commercial Appeal reported that Allen's suspension was due to a "physical confrontation" between him and teammate Nick Calathes in practice. However, sources told ESPN.com's Marc Stein that the dispute between the two, while heated, did not reach the level of a physical confrontation.

Allen's penalty, sources say, largely stemmed from the fact that he waved off the attempt of various coaches to calm down after the incident, leading to the one-game suspension for "conduct detrimental to the team."

In addition to Allen's absence, starting forward Zach Randolph, the Grizzlies' leading rebounder, and reserve guard Beno Udrih missed the game due to illness.

Allen, who is averaging 8.1 points and 4.0 rebounds, has keyed Memphis' second unit since his move to the bench after the team's trade for Jeff Green in mid-January. Known for his defense, Allen has recorded a steal in each of his past 13 games, a streak that included eight games with multiple steals.
