Longtime NBA player Anthony Mason remains in a New York hospital following multiple heart surgeries but is "getting better," according to one of his sons.
Mason suffered congestive heart failure two weeks ago. His son, Antoine Mason, told AL.com on Monday that Mason's condition is improving.
"I actually spoke to him today. He can't talk yet, but he can hear things and respond by blinking and shaking his head and things like that. When I talked to him, my mom and him, they're telling me he's getting better," Antoine Mason, a senior guard at Auburn, told the website.
Mason's other son, Anthony Jr., who played for the D-League's Sioux Falls Sky Force last season, said in a statement earlier this month that his father was in stable condition. He also tweeted out a statement on Saturday.
"My Family appreciates all of your prayers for my father, God is definitely listening (and) my Father is too, the fight is not over, it's a delicate (and) slow process but there is progress," Anthony Jr. tweeted.
Those close to Mason feared that he was near death following a massive heart attack, so his current condition is a positive development.
"As long as he gets out of there healthy, which I can't wait for, I'll be happy," Antoine Mason said.
Mason, 48, played 13 seasons in the NBA and was a fan favorite during his five-year tenure with the New York Knicks.
The 6-foot-7 forward teamed with Charles Oakley, Patrick Ewing and John Starks to help lead the Knicks to the NBA Finals in 1994. He also won the NBA's Sixth Man Award in 1994-95.
"He's battling right now," Starks said Monday at a Garden of Dreams charity event in Manhattan. "Every day is just a fight for him. We continue to pray for him. It's just tough right now. ... He's fighting right now for his life, and I believe he's going to pull through."
