Knee issue sidelines Dwight Howard

NBA, Houston Rockets

Dwight Howard underwent an MRI that revealed he had a buildup of fluid in his right knee, the Houston Rockets announced Wednesday.

Howard will be evaluated further in the coming days, the team said.

The 10-year veteran will get a second opinion on his knee, but could miss an extended period of time, according to multiple media reports.

"We won't have Dwight for a while, I'm sure," coach Kevin McHale said Friday. "So we're just going to have to let [the team's young bigs] play."

The Rockets have been without their center since he left a 113-111 win over the Phoenix Suns last Friday. In addition to his ailing knee, Howard has also been dealing with a right ankle sprain.

Howard has averaged 16.3 points and 11.0 rebounds per game this season. He has missed 14 games overall -- including an 11-game stretch in December with a strained right knee.

Information from ESPN.com's Chris Forsberg and The Associated Press was used in this report.
