CLEVELAND -- A day after watching the Lions-Vikings game from the field as a guest of Ndamukong Suh, billionaire businessman Warren Buffett continued his sports tour by taking in the Cleveland Cavaliers' game Monday against the Charlotte Hornets in Cavs owner Dan Gilbert's courtside seats at Quicken Loans Arena.
Buffett was in town to see LeBron James play. And as he donned a blue No. 90 jersey for Suh's game, he likewise slipped on a white No. 23 James jersey for the Cavs' 97-88 win over the Hornets.
"It's unique," James said of a relationship with Buffett that started seven years ago when James spent a weekend visiting Buffett in his hometown of Omaha, Nebraska. "It's very unique. It's like, I don't know if you know the rapper, Wale, and Seinfeld -- Jerry Seinfeld. They got a pretty unique relationship, as well."
The two exchanged a brief hug on the court prior to tipoff and embraced again after the final horn before Buffett visited James in the Cavs postgame locker room.
Buffett, worth an estimated $73.5 billion according to a recent "Forbes" valuation, built his fortune through prudent investments as the chairman and CEO of Berkshire Hathaway and came to visit the man who stated early on his NBA career his desire to one day become a "global icon."
The unlikely pair joked with one another about a game of 1-on-1 they played against one another, with Buffett, 84, still bragging about a hook shot he hit against the two-time champion and four-time MVP who happens to be 55 years his junior.
Their brief exchange then turned to James' decision to leave the Miami Heat and return to Cleveland.
"This is big," Buffett said.
"In more ways than one," James replied.
Before the game, Buffett told Northeast Ohio Media Group that he and James regularly keep in touch through e-mail and are always prompt with their replies.
"Every time I send him one I hear back from him in two minutes or vice versa," Buffett told the publication.
Despite the age gap between the two and the completely different career paths they occupy, they find time for one another.
"For some odd reason our schedules kind of just work the right way when we talk to each other," James said. "And when we see things we communicate through one another and it's great to have someone like that."
James said that Monday was the second time Buffett had come to see him play since they first met in 2007. Before leaving the Cavs locker room for the night, Buffett told James he was welcome to make a return trip to Omaha anytime.
"I had an opportunity to go and spend some time with him a few years ago and our relationship just continues to grow and grow and grow," James said. "On business and then personal stuff, as well. So, it's cool."
