CHICAGO -- Chicago White Sox first baseman Paul Konerko suffered a mild concussion in Tuesday night's game against the Kansas City Royals. As a result, he was held out of Wednesday's contest and will be re-evaluated on Friday.

Konerko suffered the injury when he was hit in the side of the head by the elbow of Royals outfielder Jarrod Dyson in the seventh inning on Tuesday.

"Paulie has what is described as a mild concussion, so he was out tonight and he will rest tomorrow (the White Sox are off) and get re-evaluated on Friday," said manager Robin Ventura after the Royals' 2-1 victory on Wednesday.

Major League Baseball's policy on concussions states that if a player suffers a concussion that is determined to have lingering effects, he must miss at least seven days while his symptoms are monitored.

"There have been some serious things with concussions," Ventura said. "He has to be evaluated and there is the (policy). ... I don't know if it is (severe), but he does have a mild one."

Konerko is hitting .316 with 18 home runs and 54 RBIs in 2012.
